Burning Issue

Illegal burning is an ongoing concern in Kewaunee County. Open burning has been done for decades. However, the impact of such burning has changed dramatically since many people are burning plastics, treated wood, shingles, tires, chemicals and other harmful materials. Appeals have been made to county government to apply a strict ordinance, county-wide, to ban the burning of illegal materials. Until such an ordinance and fines are made law and enforced, it is important to document and report any illegal burning you see anywhere in the county. To report illegal burns call TIP-WDNR (1-800-847-9367) or the Kewaunee County Sherrif at 920-388-3100.

Here’s a video update on a recent illegal burn.

Nearly a year later I still witness the disturbing 50 gallon barrels belching out a stench of burning plastic and who knows what else.
It is hard to quantify, but there may be some reductions in the quantity of burning I witness, unless the burning has gone “underground” late at night…I hope not!

Thank you for increasing our community awareness to this disturbing Kewaunee County problem.
PS Shouldn’t there be a law against this and fines that can be enforced?
