Running amuck into the New Year

A few hearty souls raced into icy waters in Kewaunee this morning at the 11th annual Polar Bear Plunge. Even with a new layer of snow and fresh hope for the new year ahead, it was still clear the problem with Cladophora (green algae) persists in our most important tourist resource, Lake Michigan.

There is something very wrong here. I grew up in this area and have never seen or smelled something so obnoxious to the senses as rotting Cladophora. I have noticed that this problem is getting worse year by year.
I would like to see a dialogue started to educate Kewaunee Co. as to what is driving this hugely negative environmental disaster affecting our lake shore which in turn is adversely affecting tourism and related businesses.
