Water sampling on Monday, October 15 provided an excellent opportunity to see how runoff from heavy rain affects the quality of the watersheds in Kewaunee County. The ground had been dry and manure had been spread prior to receiving 3+ inches of rain over most of the area the weekend before sampling. The rain fell evenly for about a 36-hour period and had time to soak in. These samples were analyzed for Total Coliform Bacteria and E-coli only. Comparing these results to the September 24th test figures shows a dramatic increase in both Total Coliform Bacteria and E-coli bacteria rendering these waters unsafe.
Regular monthly testing will continue at the end of the month at which time sampling analysis will include nitrate and phosphorus levels too.
